Cataracts are when the lens on the inside of the eye becomes cloudy with time. This cloudiness can affect how much light enters the eye, therefore limiting your vision. Cataracts may take years to develop.
Simple Ways to Protect your eyes and Slow the Progression of Cataracts
-Wear Sunglasses: Ultraviolet radiation can cause changes to the lens sooner, which will cause cataracts to develop at a younger age. Proteins on the inside of the lens help maintain a clear and well functioning lens to direct light into your eyes. UV rays can break down lens proteins and change how they interact and function therefore causing cloudiness to develop. Remember, even during the winter, or on a cloudy day, the UV rays from the sun can still penetrate through clouds. Not ALL sunglasses are effective in filtering out the UV rays and protecting your eyes. Come in and make sure you have sunglasses that are effective in blocking your eyes from all types of UV rays and/or ask us about Transitions Lenses.
-Don't Smoke: Just don't do it. Besides the obvious effects on your lungs, teeth, fingernails, and overall health; smoking can cause cataracts to develop at a younger age. The carcinogens and free radicals in the smoke damage the lens on the inside of the eye as well as lower your body's overall antioxidant production. And antioxidants are important for maintaining a clear lens and producing clear vision.
-Eat Healthy: Green leafy vegetables, fruit, exercise. Those are all things we should do to help our bodies maintain at its' highest capacity.
